La Tomatina festival in Buñol sees thousands throw 120 tons of tomatoes

In the town of Buñol, Valencia, Spain, thousands of people threw over 120 tons of tomatoes at each other during the 77th "La Tomatina" festival.

The annual event, which has been held every August's last Wednesday since 1945, transformed the town streets into a sea of red.

This year, over 22,000 participants joined the festival, and VIP tickets were sold for 500 euros.

After the tomato fight, which lasted about two hours, streets and the town's river were cleaned by high-pressure water.

Some participants displayed the Palestinian flag. The festival's origins date back to a 1945 dispute among neighbors who threw vegetables at each other, leading to the tradition of La Tomatina.

Despite a ban in the 1950s, the festival was revived in 1957 after a "tomato funeral" protest, and it was officially recognized as an international tourist event by Spain's Tourism Ministry in 2002.
