The incident occurred when a male macaque monkey, which had been roaming the area in a frenzied state, entered Chaiphum's home.
It was reported that the elderly man tried to fend off the aggressive primate but was repeatedly scratched and bitten, with the monkey tearing off a large piece of his left leg. Chaiphum collapsed due to blood loss and was unable to get back up.
The elderly man was found dead on Saturday, leaning against a wall, his body covered in bite marks. When the police arrived, he was seen holding a metal bar, which he presumably had used to defend himself.
Villagers reported that a few days before the fatal macaque attack, the same monkey had attacked a family, forcing them to flee their home.
Thailand and many other Asian countries are experiencing serious problems due to the uncontrolled macaque population. It is noted that the monkeys are becoming increasingly bold, attacking towns, and posing threats to human life.
