The demand for workers is significantly higher than last year and has remained steady since December 2017, Germany's Federal Employment Agency reported on Wednesday.

According to the agency, the data shows that the labour market continues to benefit from the good state of the economy.

The information and communications sector saw a particularly large increase in vacancies, up 31 percent compared with the previous year.

The number of job openings in industry rose by 27 per cent, while the transport and logistics sector saw a rise of 21 percent.

Meanwhile, the demand for labour fell in the education sector, the hospitality industry and among service providers.

According to the agency, one reason that the number of vacancies remains high is the fact that positions are remaining unfilled for longer due to a lack of applicants.

The Federal Employment Agency is due to publish the total number of vacancies after the March unemployment figures are released on Thursday.
