Turkey's Aksa Energy officially opened its electricity generation plant in Madagascar on Tuesday.
The company said that the first phase of the plant, which has 66 megawatts of installed capacity, started commercial activity on Sept. 5.
The plant will produce 500 million kilowatt-hours of electricity, which will cover 34 percent of Madagascar's total energy needs.
The power plant is the first and only energy investment in Madagascar by the Turkish private sector.
Madagascar President Hery Rajaonarimampianina, Prime Minister Olivier Mahavaly Solonandrasana and Energy Minister Lantoniaina Rasoloelison attended the opening ceremony, Aksa confirmed.
