A Tunisian police officer was injured on Wednesday by a knife-wielding attacker near the parliament building in capital Tunis, according to a statement issued by the Interior Ministry.

"Someone attacked a traffic police patrol this morning in Tunis's Bardo Square," the statement read, noting that one police officer had been stabbed in the neck and had since been hospitalized.

According to the ministry, the perpetrator was quickly arrested and has since confessed to having carried out the attack.

"The perpetrator described Tunisian security personnel as 'tyrants' and believes killing them is a kind of 'jihad'," read the ministry statement.

The authorities have since launched an investigation to determine the circumstances of the attack.

In 2015, militants attacked Tunis's Bardo Museum, leaving 21 people -- mostly foreign tourists -- dead.
