Saudi foreign minister says lasting ceasefire needed in Gaza

During a meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona, Spain, Prince Faisal bin Farhan, Saudi Foreign Minister, emphasized the need for a permanent ceasefire in Gaza as the current four-day agreement approaches its conclusion. He stated that while the current pause may have some benefits, it will not be fully effective unless it is accompanied by a complete and long-lasting halt to all military actions.

Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan called for a lasting truce in Gaza, as the four-day ceasefire agreement nears its end.

"The pause is only temporary. It will produce limited value unless it is followed by comprehensive and lasting cessation of military operations," Faisal told a meeting of the Union for the Mediterranean in Barcelona, Spain.

He said that more aid is needed in the besieged Palestinian territory.

A continuation of military escalation will only result in "more destruction, radicalization and further carnage at the expense of Palestinian lives as well as regional security including that of Israel," the Saudi diplomat said.

He also said "Israel needs to be held accountable for the atrocities it committed, if not through sanctions, then by applying ... pressure on it to change its course."

The Qatar-brokered four-day ceasefire is set to last until at least Tuesday morning. The pause in fighting has seen humanitarian move into Gaza and the release of some hostages held by Hamas in exchange for Palestinian prisoners held in Israeli jails.

Officials on both sides of the conflict, as well as in the US and Qatar, have expressed hopes for an extended truce beyond the originally agreed four days.

The meeting of 27 foreign ministers from the 43 member states of the Union for the Mediterranean was also attended by EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell, who emphasized the need for a two-state solution to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.
