A severe thunderstorm killed at least six people in the Russian capital on Monday, the state's highest investigative agency said.

About 70 people sought medical attention because of injuries suffered during the storm, state media reported.

Winds reached speeds of about 80 kilometres per hour. Local media reported as many as eight deaths.

"The exact number of victims is being determined," the Investigative Committee said in a statement.

Deaths were attributed to falling trees and other objects, according to the statement. Strong winds knocked over two trees outside dpa's Moscow bureau.

Mayor Sergei Sobyanin said "several hundred trees" fell during the storm. "We are conducting necessary measures to eliminate the aftermath of the disaster," Sobyanin said on Twitter.
