A Turkish soldier was martyred Friday in an attack by PKK terrorist group in a southeastern province, a military source said.

The terrorists opened fire on security forces when they were carrying out a search operation in rural areas of Uludere district in Şırnak province, the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to restrictions on talking to the media, told Anadolu Agency.

One soldier sustained injuries in the attack and was taken to Şırnak State Hospital. Later, he succumbed to his wounds.

The casualties of PKK terrorists are not known.

More than 1,200 victims, including security force personnel and civilians, have lost their lives since the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU -- resumed its decades-old armed campaign in July 2015.
