The ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Party) will hold an emergency leadership caucus to discuss President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's readmission to the party May 21, reports said Thursday.

The announcement comes following a constitutional reform referendum, which will allow the president to have party affiliation.

The meeting was previously scheduled to take place in September, but Erdoğan is now expected to take over leadership of the party.

Erdoğan had to cut his ties with the AK Party after being elected president in 2014, in line with the constitution, but the new constitutional reforms will allow the president to keep party affiliation.

Over 58 million voters participated in the April 16 referendum, in which the "yes" campaign gained 51.4 percent of the vote, while the "no" campaign gained 48.6 percent of the vote
