Bayern Munich are readily to invest big in order to be competitive on all fronts over the next years, the president of the Bundesliga champions, Uli Hoeness, said at the end of a modest season by their standard.
hoeness said Saturday at Munich's latest Bundesliga title celebrations that the club leadership and coach Carlo Ancelotti will discuss the strategy over the next days and weeks, with selling players also possible.
He did not rule out spending in excess of 100 million euros (112 million dollars), but not such a sum for just one player, although he suggested "we could do something we have never done before" if Bayern really wanted a player.
"If you want to strengthen our squad you have to buy real cracks. It will certainly be a mix of experienced players and players with a future," Hoeness told Bayerischer Rundfunk TV.
"The problem is that you are in a market in which sums are discussed and paid which we didn't consider possible up to now."
Bayern aim to bolster their squad as they had hoped for more than just a fifth straight Bundesliga title. They were eliminated by Borussia Dortmund in the German cup semis and by Real Madrid in the Champions League quarter-finals.
"I'm convinced it's an exception that we only have one title this year. With this team and with this spirit it'll be possible to achieve more," Hoeness said.
Munich have already signed the Hoffenheim duo of defender Niklas Suele and midfielder Sebastian Rudy for the new season, and there is ongoing speculation they are also after a third Germany player, Schalke midfielder Leon Goretzka.
Captain Philipp Lahm and midfielder Xabi Alonso have retired, and wingers Franck Ribery and Arjen Robben are in the dusk of their career.
