Former Germany international Mesut Özil met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan for an iftar event in Istanbul late Saturday.

The broadcaster NTV reported, using pictures made available by the presidential office, Özil and his fiancee Amine Gülşe attended the fast breaking meal Erdoğan hosted in Dolmabahçe Palace.

Several others were also in attendance as Turkey prepared to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the start of their war of independence on Sunday.

In March the Turkish presidential office published a picture showing a card inviting Erdoğan to Özil and Gülşe's wedding.
