French Foreign Minister Jean-Yves Le Drian on Tuesday described the situation in the Middle East as "explosive" and criticised the United States for unilateral acts in the region.

"The situation in the Middle East is explosive, violence is doing the talking, war could loom," he told lawmakers in parliament.

French President Emmanuel Macron also condemned the violence against Palestinian demonstrators in Gaza in a statement and reiterated his opposition to the move of the U.S. embassy to Jerusalem.

"(Macron) lamented the large number of Palestinian civilian casualties in Gaza today and over the past few weeks," the French presidency said.

"He condemned the violence of Israeli armed forces against demonstrators."
