Turkish fighter jets have "neutralized" at least nine PKK terrorists in northern Iraq, according to the Turkish military on Tuesday.

The airstrikes targeted a group of terrorists in the Zap region, who were preparing to carry out acts of terror, the Turkish General Staff said in a statement.

A shelter used by the terrorists and 2 weapon emplacements were also destroyed during the operation.

More than 1,200 people, including security personnel and civilians, have lost their lives since the PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S., and EU -- resumed its decades-long armed campaign in July 2015.

According to the military, almost 10,000 terrorists have been neutralized in air and land operations since then. More than 7,000 of these terrorists were killed while the rest were wounded, captured or surrendered.
