Sevilla have reappointed Monchi as sporting director, the Spanish club said Sunday.

The Andalusian side sacked coach Pablo Machin on Friday, with Joaquin Caparros, the previous sporting director, taking the position.

Monchi left Sevilla for Roma in April 2017 and is well regarded for his ability to bring in talented players at low prices who improve and then can be sold on for more money.

"Ramon Rodriguez Verdejo, Monchi, returns to the place which will always he his home," said Sevilla in a statement.

"He starts his second era at Sevilla, where he arrived in 1988 as a goalkeeper and left in 2017 as one of the most reputable sporting directors in the world."

Monchi had been linked with taking a sporting director role at Arsenal, but preferred to return to the south of Spain.

In his previous reign Sevilla won a record five UEFA Cup/Europa League titles.
