Israel hit a record for daily coronavirus case numbers on Wednesday, with the 2,183 new infections reported marking the biggest one-day jump since the outbreak in the country began.

It was the second day this week that the record has been broken, after Israel's Health Ministry reported 2,182 new cases on Monday.

Despite the numbers, the country started its school year on Tuesday. The government had aimed to significantly shrink its number of new infections by then, especially considering that mid-September is when the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah, is celebrated. The possibility of a nationwide lockdown is in the cards, along with other measures.

Israel began seeing its number of daily infections rise above 2,000 for the first time in a month starting last Friday. The country had at first seen relatively few cases due to strict government restrictions, but after a rapid easing in May, cases have spiked.

More than 119,500 cases have been recorded in total so far, with the number of coronavirus-related deaths at 963.
