Indonesia's confirmed cases of Covid-19 passed 30,000 on Saturday as the country reported its biggest single-day rise.

The number of cases rose by 993 in the past 24 hours, taking the national tally to 30,514, the Health Ministry said.

Thirty-one additional deaths overnight brought the number of fatalities to 1,801, the ministry said.

Experts have attributed the jump in daily cases in recent days to increased testing.

The Indonesian capital, Jakarta, and surrounding towns began easing Covid-19 restrictions on Friday, as part of the gradual opening of the economy countrywide.

Workers will be able to return to their workplaces on Monday, while shopping centres are expected to reopen on June 15.
