The European Union must act together against climate change if it is to play a leading role on the issue, German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Saturday.

Germany would make its contribution to ensuring that Europe is the first climate-neutral continent, Merkel said in her weekly video podcast.

She welcomed the target mentioned by European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen at a UN climate summit earlier this week, that the European Union should become climate neutral by 2050.

"This means of course that all member states have to pull together. But not everyone has decided to do so yet," Merkel said.
