U.S. President Donald Trump said on Monday that YPG [militants] in northeast Syria might be releasing captive Daesh terrorists to lure U.S. troops back to the area, adding that they could be easily recaptured.
"Kurds [YPG] may be releasing some to get us involved. Easily recaptured by Turkey or European Nations from where many came, but they should move quickly," Trump said in a series of posts on Twitter.
"Europe had a chance to get their ISIS [Daesh] prisoners, but didn't want the cost. 'Let the USA pay,' they said..." Trump tweeted, using an alternate acronym for the Daesh terror group.
Turkey denied Monday that its offensive had allowed Daesh prisoners to break out of detention camps, charging Monday that YPG militants had instead deliberately "emptied" a prison.
The Turkish offensive followed a decision by Trump to withdraw the remaining 1,000 U.S. troops from northern Syria.
Turkey aims to neutralize the YPG militants, the primary element of the Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), Washington's ally. Ankara views the YPG as a Syrian branch of the bloody-minded PKK terror group.
