Greek fighter jet crashes in sea after patrol, pilot dies

A Greek fighter jet on Thursday crashed into the Aegean Sea, Greek Defense Ministry said. The Mirage 2000-5 aircraft went down around 12:15 local time (0915GMT) northeast of Skyros Island, east of Eyvia peninsula.

Defense ministry officials in Greece said an air force fighter jet crashed into the eastern Aegean Sea after returning from a patrol on Thursday.

The officials told state-run television that the Mirage 2000-5 crashed north of the island of Skyros. They gave no information about the possible cause of the crash.

Greece's defense minister Panos Kammenos announced on his Twitter account that the Greek military pilot died when the jet crashed around 12:15 local time (0915GMT).

He also wished condolences to the family of the late pilot.

Earlier, the Defense Ministry said the Mirage 2000-5 aircraft went down northeast of Skyros Island, east of the Eyvia peninsula, northeast of Athens.
