The US is ending its participation in a United Nations declaration that seeks to create an international framework for dealing with migrants.

"Our decisions on immigration policies must always be made by Americans and Americans alone," US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley said on Twitter.

The September 2016 Global Compact for Migration seeks to "strengthen global governance of migration," according to the UN's International Organization for Migration (IOM).

The declaration strives to create a unified migration framework for participating nations to ensure migrant safety, integration and treatment as well as fighting discrimination of migrants.

The refugee and migration proclamation, which is set to be adopted by participating countries in 2018, "is simply not compatible with US sovereignty," Haley said in the statement posted on Twitter.

The US began its participation in the migration plan under former US President Barack Obama.

Many of the provisions of the UN declaration are inconsistent with President Donald Trump's immigration principles, the US mission's statement said.

Trump campaigned for the presidency last year on an America First agenda as well as a promise to strengthen control on migration.
