Eight people were killed and 16 others injured in tribal clashes in Sudan's western Darfur province, according to a local Sudanese official.

The violence broke out in South Darfur state on Monday between the tribes of Salamat and Habbaniya, deputy governor Sabeel Ahmed Sabeel said.

"A delegation has been sent to the area to defuse the crisis," he said.

The cause of the violence remains unknown, but tribal tension often flares up over farming.

Last month, ten people were killed in tribal fighting in eastern Darfur.

Darfur has been the scene of a ferocious war between the Sudanese government and three rebel movements since 2003. The conflict has left 300,000 people dead and around 2.5 million others displaced, according to UN figures.

The Sudanese government, however, insists that the death toll does not exceed 10,000 people.
