The death toll of a migrant boat that sank nearly three weeks ago in Lake Van in south-eastern Turkey rose to 43, state news agency Anadolu reported Friday.

Three more bodies were recovered on Friday as search efforts still continued, Anadolu said.

The identities of the victims were not immediately clear. Five people have reportedly been arrested in relation to the accident.

The boat capsized on June 27 and was carrying around 60 migrants, Interior Minister Süleyman Soylu had said.

Anadolu said the sunken boat was found at a depth of 106 metres in the lake, close to the border with Iran.

Asylum seekers and migrants have been using the border with Iran as a gateway into Turkey in the hope of reaching Europe.

In December, seven people died and 64 were rescued after another boat carrying migrants capsized on Lake Van. The boat had been carrying migrants from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan.

Turkey hosts nearly 4 million refugees, including 3.6 million from neighbouring war-torn Syria.
