Turkish police shot a tractor driver after he crushed several cars while apparently on the way to protest outside the Israeli embassy in Ankara, state news agency Anadolu reported.

Police said they shot the 45-year-old in the leg after he ignored calls to stop. The man, who was taken into custody, told police he planned at the Israeli embassy.

The farmer had driven down a road closed to traffic towards Parliament on Tuesday morning, Anadolu reported.

The tractor came to a halt after ramming six vehicles, close to the residence of the Israeli ambassador.

The Ankara governor's office said the man had been receiving treatment for psychological problems since 2007.

The Israeli ambassador to Turkey returned to Israel in May amid a diplomatic rift between the two countries.
