Croatian defender Darijo Srna ends football career

Croatian football veteran Darijo Srna ended his professional career at the age of 37.

Italian Serie A team Cagliari's defender Srna announced his retirement from football with a social media announcement on Wednesday.

"It is difficult to find the right words with which I could express the pride of finding myself among you at the end of my footballing journey, of having known real friends, great players and even bigger people," Srna said on Instagram.

"This year I spent among you will remain special to me. As a man, as a sportsman, I will never forget the support and friendship I felt among you, I will never forget the love of the fans and all of you in the club," the Croatian right back said and adding that he will remain a fan of Cagliari.

Srna, who had 134 appearances for Croatia, scored 22 goals for his country, has previously played for Croatia's Hajduk Split and Ukrainian football giants Shakhtar Donetsk.

Veteran player's best years came with Shakhtar, as he spent 15 years in this club.

He won 10 Ukrainian top-tier Premier League titles with Shakhtar Donetsk.

In addition to this local campaign success, Srna won the 2009 UEFA Cup in Istanbul.

From 2003 to 2018, he scored 45 goals in 493 matches at Shakhtar Donetsk.
