Defender Matija Nastasic was shown a red card as Schalke slipped to a stoppage-time 2-1 defeat at Wolfsburg on Saturday as the video review again took centre stage in the Bundesliga.

Both promoted sides Fortuna Dusseldorf and Nuremberg began the season with defeats while Eintracht Frankfurt won 2-0 at Freiburg, and Werder Bremen and Hanover finished 1-1.

Dusseldorf fell 2-1 at home to Augsburg after leading, while Nuremberg were beaten 1-0 at Hertha Berlin.

As in Bayern Munich's season-opening 3-1 win over Hoffenheim on Friday, the video review played a key role in Schalke's game at Wolfsburg.

Serbia defender Nastasic was first shown a yellow card before it was converted to red in the 66th minute following a touchline video review after he caught Wout Weghorst with his studs despite playing the ball.

Minutes later Weghorst was shown red after a wrangle with Guido Burgstaller, but that was then changed to yellow following another touchline review.

A 33rd-minute header by John Anthony Brooks put Wolfsburg ahead, but the US defender conceded a penalty with a high challenge on Breel Embolo, and substitute Nabil Bentaleb converted from the spot in the 85th minute.

The home side though hit back in the fourth minute of stoppage time when substitute Daniel Ginczek followed up to score the winner after keeper Ralf Faehrmann had saved from Yannick Gerhardt.

Borussia Moenchengladbach host Bayer Leverkusen in the day's later game.
