German coach Thomas Tuchel is the favourite to take charge at French top club Paris Saint-Germain if current helmsman Unai Emery has to go, French sports paper L'Equipe said on Friday.

L'Equipe said that the former Mainz and Borussia Dortmund coach has impressed top officials at Qatari owned PSG with his game plan and fluent French.

German news reports also said last weekend that Tuchel could go to PSG instead of an English top club. He was reportedly also sought by Germany's Bayern Munich but is said to have told them he has committed himself to another club.

L'Equipe Friday front page showed Tuchel, and Germany national team coach Joachim Loew, with the German national colours and a headline "Paris' German option."

It said Loew could be a candidate in case Tuchel was not available, but that appears highly unlikely as Loew prepares Germany for the World Cup title defence in summer in Russia and is contracted until 2020.

Tuchel was released in Dortmund after the past season in which they finished second in the league and won the German cup.

Emery could be on his way out after two years as the runaway domestic league leaders PSG failed again to win the Champions League for the first time, going out in the last 16 against title holders Real Madrid.

But sports director Antero Henrique insisted ahead of the weekend league cup final against Monaco that Emery has a contract and "that this is not the moment to speak about this issue. We are in an important part of the season."
