Floods caused by extreme rainfall killed at least three people in Italy's northern Tuscany region, local media reported on Friday.

At least four people remain missing in the region, said the state-run ANSA news agency, adding that Tuscany Governor Eugenio Giani has declared a state of emergency.

The Arno River, which runs through the region, is expected to reach a peak in Pisa before flowing into the Tyrrhenian Sea at the nearby Marina di Pisa around midnight on Friday, it also warned.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni extended her condolences to the victims of the flood.

"I am following with apprehension the evolution of the calamitous events that have hit Tuscany in particular and I express my deep condolences," she said on X.
