Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on Monday condemned the US sanctions against Cuba.
"We strongly condemn this inhumane and illegitimate policy of Washington. All sanctions imposed on Havana restrict the natural and inalienable rights of not only Cuban citizens, but also US citizens, are absolutely illegal and grossly violate the fundamental principles of the UN Charter," Lavrov told reporters after a meeting with his Cuban counterpart Ricardo Cabrisas in Moscow.
Lavrov added that in pandemic conditions it is important for all countries to show political will, wisdom, and foresight, move away from trade wars and sanctions, and join forces to fight this common scourge based on mutual understanding, solidarity, and support.
"However, Washington, once again demonstrating its conviction in its own 'exclusivity' and imaginary permissiveness, whipping up 'anti-Cuban hysteria', continues to tighten the trade, economic, and financial blockade of the island, despite the categorical condemnation of these actions by the world community, expressed by an almost unanimous vote on the draft anti-blockade resolution in the UN General Assembly," Lavrov said.
Meanwhile, Russia is always ready to provide necessary support to its strategic partner and friend, the Republic of Cuba, he said.
Last week, US President Donald Trump said he will further tighten restrictions on Americans' travel to Cuba and goods from the island nation.
Trump framed the measures as "part of our continuing fight against communist oppression" and said they will prohibit the import of Cuban alcohol and tobacco and bar Americans from staying at Cuban government-owned properties if they visit the Caribbean nation.
In addition, the Treasury Department said the US would also ban Americans from organizing conferences or meetings, as well as "participating in and organizing certain public performances, clinics, workshops, competitions, and exhibitions" in Cuba.
The restrictions will become effective as soon as they are published in the Federal Register.
