Indonesia recorded nearly 4,200 new coronavirus cases on Monday, the country's highest daily jump, as calls were mounting for the government to postpone local elections scheduled for December.

Health Ministry data showed 4,176 new Covid-19 infections were recorded overnight, taking the total number of confirmed cases to 248,852.

The death toll rose by 124 to 9,677, the ministry said.

Experts said actual figures are likely to be much higher, as the country has one of the lowest Covid-19 testing rates in the world.

Meanwhile, the country's second-largest Muslim organization, Muhammadiyah, urged the government to postpone various local elections scheduled for December 9.

Voters are to elect nine governors, 224 regents, and 37 mayors across the archipelago nation of 265 million.

Muhammadiyah said that the government has not been able to get the pandemic under control because of poor coordination and public communication.

"The safety of the people is far more important than regional elections, which could turn out to be Covid-19 infection clusters," the group said in a statement.

A spokesman for President Joko Widodo, Fadjroel Rachman, said the elections would not be postponed.

"The elections will be administered with strict health protocols to prevent Covid-19 transmission," he said in a statement.

Authorities in the capital Jakarta last week reimposed large-scale social restrictions to curb Covid-19 after new cases reported daily exceeded 1,000.

Indonesia gradually reopened the economy and public life in June, but coronavirus infections have soared since then.
