China reported 68 new cases of the new coronavirus on Monday, of which 64 were domestically transmitted, health authorities said.

Far-western Xinjiang, the scene of a recent resurgence by the virus, saw 57 new cases, the latest figures from the National Health Commission showed.

North-eastern Liaoning province, where a cluster of new cases has been traced back to a seafood processing plant in the port city of Dalian, reported six new cases, fewer than half the number reported the day before.

Municipal authorities have imposed quarantine on all close contacts of the company's staff and locked down the surrounding area, placing the city on a "wartime" footing according to local officials.

Hundreds of flights to and from Dalian, comprising close to 80 per cent of the city's total air traffic, were cancelled on Monday to prevent the virus from spreading further.

Four new imported cases were also reported in Shanghai, Beijing and Yunnan.
