Al-Azhar condemns stabbing attack in Melbourne

Al-Azhar, the highest seat of learning in the Sunni Islamic world, has decried a stabbing attack that left two people dead in the Australian city of Melbourne.

"These terrorist attacks cannot be justified or tolerated and are criminalized by all religious teachings and human values," the Cairo-based institution said in a statement on Saturday.

Offering condolences to the Australian government and people, Al-Azhar underlined "the need not to tolerate with those who promote hatred, racism and violence and to work to consolidate the values of coexistence and tolerance."

On Friday, one person was fatally stabbed and two others injured in a terrorist attack. Australian police said the assailant was killed.

Daesh terrorist group claimed responsibility for the attack.
