Trump says spoke to Saudis at 'highest level' over missing journalist

US President Donald Trump said Wednesday he has talked to Saudi authorities "at the highest level" to demand answers over what happened to missing journalist Jamal Khashoggi. Trump told reporters at the White House that he talked to the Saudi leadership "more than once" since Khashoggi, a US resident and Washington Post contributor, vanished on October 2 after entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul. "We're demanding everything. We want to see what's going on there," he said.

President Donald Trump said on Wednesday he has talked to officials in Saudi Arabia at the highest levels about the disappearance of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi and wants the United States to get to the bottom of the matter.

Khashoggi disappeared a week ago and was last seen entering the Saudi consulate in Istanbul where he went to pick up a document he needed for his planned marriage.

Turkish officials have said they believe the Saudi writer and government critic was killed inside his country's consulate in Istanbul after he visited the mission.

Trump told reporters that he would like to invite Khashoggi's fiancee to the White House.

Trump says nobody knows exactly what happened and expressed hope that Khashoggi is not dead.

He says he's spoken with the Saudis about what he called a "bad situation," but he did not disclose details of his conversations.
