Thousands of protesters took to the streets in the Jordanian capital Amman to protest US President Donald Trump's recognition of Jerusalem as the Israeli capital.

Demonstrators gathered near al-Husseini mosque in Amman, carrying Palestinian flags and placards, with one of them reading "A cowardly decision," according to footage on state television.

Several lawmakers, led by Parliament Speaker Atef al-Tarawna, joined the protest in the centre of the city, local media reported.

Protesters in Zarqa city carried signs reading "All Palestine is Arab." Demonstrators also took to the streets in other parts of the country, including the northern city of Irbid as well as al-Karak, around 130 kilometres south of Amman.
