Germany's Social Democrats (SPD) have yet to make a decision on whether to pursue a new grand coalition with Chancellor Angela Merkel's conservative Christian Democrats (CDU), SPD chief Martin Schulz said.

"We have a lot of options [to build a government]," Schulz said.

The comments come after a meeting of SPD leaders on Friday and Schulz' closed-door talks with Merkel and the head of her Bavarian-based Christian Social Union (CSU) allies late Thursday.

"We are not under any time pressure," said Schulz, who said he had phoned Merkel to complain about her party being the source of earlier press reports claiming the SPD was ready for coalition talks.
