Five Houthi commanders were killed in a Saudi-led airstrike in northwestern Yemen near border with Saudi Arabia on Monday, according to the Yemeni army.

A military statement did not give details about the attack, only saying that the raid took place in Harad city in northwestern Hajjah province.

There was no comment from either the Houthi group or the Saudi-led coalition on the claim.

Yemen fell into civil war in 2014 when Houthi rebels overran the capital Sanaa and much of the country, forcing the government to set up an interim capital in the coastal city of Aden.

In 2015, Saudi Arabia and its Arab allies launched a devastating air campaign aimed at rolling back Houthi military gains in Yemen.

According to UN figures, more than 10,000 people -- including numerous civilians -- have been killed to date as a result of the conflict.
