The UN Security Council on Tuesday condemned North Korea for its ballistic missile test over Japan.

Following a closed-door emergency meeting, the council's 15 members unanimously adopted a statement demanding Pyongyang immediately halt "all outrageous acts."

The country is "deliberately undermining regional peace and stability and has caused grave security concerns around the world," it stressed, alluding to the North's most recent test of a ballistic missile that flew over Japan and into the East Sea.

The statement also demanded that North Korea stop all nuclear programs and related activities.

The North on Monday launched a ballistic missile that traveled 2,700 kilometers (1,677 miles) and flew over Japan before crashing into the northern Pacific Ocean.

There was no mention of the use of force or imposing sanctions against the country.

Pyongyang is barred from nuclear and ballistic missile testing under UN Security Council resolutions, a prohibition it has routinely ignored.
