At least one civilian was killed and five others injured late Wednesday in a mortar attack by the PKK/PYD terrorist group in Syria's northern Aleppo province, according to a local medical source.

The attack targeted opposition-held positions on the outskirts of the town of Marea, Abdurrahman Hafiz, a doctor at Marea's main hospital, told Anadolu Agency.

According to Hafiz, one civilian was killed in the attack and five others injured.

The PKK/PYD is the Syrian affiliate of the PKK, which has been branded a terrorist group by Turkey, the EU and the U.S.

Yet despite its known association with terrorism, Washington views the PYD as a viable ally against the Daesh terrorist group in Syria.

In 2015, the PKK resumed its violent campaign against Turkey and has since been responsible for the death of some 1,200 people throughout the country.
