Former premier's wife to stand in Pakistan parliament
The wife of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif has been nominated to contest his seat, the ruling party said Friday.
Kalsoom Nawaz will run in the National Assembly by-election in northeastern Lahore next month for the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N).
"Kalsoom Nawaz is going to the parliament," son-in-law Muhammad Safdar Awan, who is also a National Assembly lawmaker, said after submitting her nomination papers at the election commission office in Lahore.
"Her victory is written on the wall."
Sharif, who was disqualified from office by the Supreme Court on July 28, won the constituency in the 2013 general election.
His wife is likely to lead the PML-N in parliament.
The former premier is currently leading a procession from Islamabad to Lahore, the capital of Punjab province and the PML-N's seat of power.
