Flooding from heavy rains has killed three people and displaced about 140,000 residents across the country, authorities said Monday.

About "34,823 households" have been forced to "flee their homes since early July," according to the Ministry of Social Welfare, Relief, and Resettlement.

The flooding has affected the Sagaing, Magwe, Bago and Ayeyarwady regions as well as Kayin, Mon and Shan states and the political capital of Nay Pyi Taw, the agency said in a news release.

It added that more than 200 schools were temporarily closed, affecting at least 25,000 students.

The Department of Meteorology and Hydrology warned of more flooding across in the coming weeks due to continuous heavy rain.
