Prime Minister and Socialist Party (PS) President Edi Rama declared victory Tuesday after a snap parliamentary contest.

According to unofficial initial results from the Albania's Central Election Commission, Rama won 48 percent of the vote.

The election was called after Rama and opposition leader and Democratic Party (PD) President Lulzim Basha reached an agreement May 18.

Nearly 3.5 million voters went to the polls Sunday to select the new government.

A total of 74 seats in the 140-seat parliament are reserved for Rama's Socialist Party.

The Democratic Party won 29 percent and the Socialist Movement for Integration (LSI) received 14 percent.

PS supporters celebrated the victory in Tirana as Rama said Albania "chose their future" in the election.
