Anti-Le Pen protesters clash with French police

Dozens of people protesting against far-right candidate Marine Le Pen clashed with police, preventing them from heading to the entertainment complex in eastern Paris where she was holding an evening rally.

French police resorted to tear gas to fend off protesters.

Inside the complex, the crowd waved flags and chanted "we are in our land" as they waited for the event to start.

Far-right candidate Le Pen is known for her anti-Islam and anti-European union outbursts and has spearheaded a growing rightwing movement in France.

The election is one of the most unpredictable in modern French history. Le Pen has been jostling with centrist candidate Emmanuel Macron for the lead in polls.
