In less than five years the wholesale price of the vanilla bean has soared nearly 500 percent, making it the second most expensive spice on the planet and worth more per kilo than silver. But the Sweet boom brought sour costs in an epidemic of theft, mob justice and a dramatic fall in the quality of the coveted spice.
