Large amount of explosives seized at Turkey-Iran border

Turkish customs enforcement officers seized a large amount of explosives at the Turkish-Iranian border, officials said Thursday.

According to a statement from the Trade Ministry, an Iranian citizen tried to cross the Esendere Customs Gate with a valid passport.

He had six sacks and a suitcase with him, which he said, were filled with limes.

The officers got suspicious and brought sleuthhounds, trained to detect explosives.

It was found the sacks carried 221 kilograms of potassium chlorate, a key ingredient used to make explosives.

The suspect has been arrested and remanded in custody.

An investigation has been launched to check possible links of the suspect with terror groups, the statement added.
