A total of 800 Syrian students in northwest Syria's Jarabulus and Al-Bab districts took the university entrance exam in order to pursue higher education in Turkish universities, according to a statement by Turkey's Harran University on Tuesday.

The statement said Foreign Students Exam (YÖS) was held in 14 classrooms in Jarabulus and 26 classrooms in Al-Bab.

800 students participated in the exam, it said, and those who are successful will be able to enroll at one of the 60 designated universities in Turkey.

The statement said the exam questions were prepared by the teaching staff of Harran University in Turkish, English and Arabic.

"We have held the exam in Syria to make it more convenient for the students who could not come to Turkey for that," the statement quoted Harran University Rector Prof. Ramazan Tasaltin as saying.

Mustafa Jasim, the head of the Jarabulus Local Assembly Education Commission, thanked Turkey for "giving a future" to Syrian children.

"We, the people of the region, will never forget this support of Turkey," he said.
