Turkish security forces killed eight members of the PKK terrorist organization in the eastern Kars province on Sunday, according to the governor.

The Gendarmerie Command Units of the city have launched an air-supported anti-terror operation in Kagizman district, Kars Governor Rahmi Dogan told Anadolu Agency.

He noted that the operation was conducted after detecting the terrorist positions by surveillance image.

"Eight terrorists were killed and the security forces are searching for another terrorist who is on the run," Dogan added.

In operations conducted since 2016, a total of 35 PKK terrorists have been killed by the security forces in Kars province, according to the Governor's office.

The PKK -- listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey, the U.S. and EU -- resumed its armed campaign against Turkey in July 2015. Since then, it has been responsible for the deaths of around 1,200 people, including women and children.
