Former England and Manchester United captain Rio Ferdinand has revealed he will pursue a professional boxing career at the age of 38.
Gambling company Betfair on Tuesday heralded Ferdinand's move to the ring with a video on Twitter.
"It's a challenge, I am doing this because it's a challenge. Simple as that," Ferdinand says in the video. "I have won titles. Now I am aiming for a belt."
Ferdinand, who retired two years ago from professional football, will be coached by Team Great Britain and former WBC world champion, Richie Woodhall.
He will also be coached by personal trainer and former rugby union player, Mel Deane.
"When Betfair approached me about the Defender to Contender challenge, the chance to prove myself in a new sport was a real draw," Ferdinand was quoted as saying in an exclusive story by The Telegraph.
"It's a challenge I'm not taking lightly, clearly not everyone can become a professional boxer, but with the team of experts Betfair are putting together and the drive I have to succeed, anything is possible."
Ferdinand, during a long career, played for West Ham United, Queens Park Rangers, Leeds United and Manchester United in more than 500 appearances.
He also captained England and played 81 times for his country.
