We all share this beautiful blue planet with animals and plants that are vital for our survival as well as the survival of the Earth we are living on. To raise the status of animals in order to improve their welfare standards, the world celebrates World Animal Day on Oct. 4. Believing that each and every one of us can make a difference for animals, this day aims to bring attention to the animals of our planet.

To mark this important day, events to raise awareness on animals and their rights will be held across Turkey. Panel sessions and seminars will be held to inform animal lovers how to take care of their pets as well as about animal rights. Istanbul's Maltepe district will screen award-wining documentary "Kedi" ("Cat"), which portrays the famous cats of Istanbul's streets. The screening will be free of charge for those who bring cat or dog food to the screening. Also some municipalities across Turkey are inviting pet owners to bring their four-legged friends to get them vaccinated free of charge. Moreover, supermarkets are offering a discount on pet food, encouraging people to feed stray animals.

According to the World Wildlife Fund's Living Planet Index, the global populations of fish, birds, mammals, amphibians and reptiles declined by 58 percent between 1970 and 2012. By 2020 mankind may witness the loss of two-thirds of the entire animal population unless action is taken to reform food and energy systems and meet global commitments on addressing climate change, protecting biodiversity and supporting sustainable development. All these things make World Animal Day even more important.
