Turkey's development agency has renovated a primary school in Chile's capital Santiago, according to a statement from the agency Thursday.

The renovation work was instructed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan at the Mustafa Kemal Ataturk Primary School during his visit to the Latin American country in 2016, Turkish Cooperation and Coordination Agency (TIKA) said.

TIKA said the update to the school included the replacement of classroom floors and window frames as well as refurbishments to the sports hall and the playground.

"We thank Turkey for the renovation project which supports our children's education in a better environment," school's principal, Javier Vega Vega, told an opening ceremony.

Nearly 300 students attend the Mustafa Kemal Ataturk Primary School, which was opened in 1960, TIKA said.
