Turkish students won a technology contest held in London for producing a car prototype, their university announced Monday.

The University of Uludağ said in a statement the students designed and produced a car prototype that uses hydrogen as fuel at the Shell Eco-marathon.

The energy efficiency competition was held between July 5-8 in the U.K.

Barbaros, the prototype, will cover a total of 182.6 kilometers in one cubic meter of Hydrogen, the statement said.

"The effort of every member bagged us the first rank," said Alperen Kaya, the team leader.

"We aim to develop its capacity in the near future," he added, expressing his gratitude to the university and all the participants.

In the last few years, cars which run on hydrogen-powered fuel cells have become commercially available, with some analysts saying they will become the next big thing in the automobile sector after electric cars.
