Omani Sultan Qaboos bin Said on Monday held talks with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif in capital Muscat.

According to Oman's official news agency, the two men discussed bilateral cooperation in various fields "with a view to serving the shared interests of the Omani and Iranian peoples".

Sultan Qaboos and Zarif also discussed recent political developments in the region, the news agency reported.

The meeting was also attended by Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah, Oman's minister in charge of foreign affairs.

Zarif arrived in Muscat on Monday morning for a one-day official visit to the Gulf sultanate.

Shorty after his arrival, Zarif met his Omani counterpart with whom he discussed means of enhancing bilateral ties and regional developments.

Unlike most other Arab Gulf states, Oman, which overlooks the strategic Strait of Hormuz, maintains strong relations with Shia Iran.
